Tewksbury man charged in Salisbury hit-and-run crash that killed Amesbury mom

A Tewksbury man has been arrested and charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed an Amesbury mom.

Deven M. Tanguay, 32, is being charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury collision, death resulting; motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation; motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation; unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle; and a marked lanes violation.

A warrant was obtained for the suspect on Monday, and Tanguay was arrested on Tuesday. Tanguay is scheduled for arraignment in Newburyport District Court Tuesday.

It was around 11:16 p.m. Friday that police responded to a 911 call for a motor vehicle crash on Folly Mill Road that involved a pedestrian, according to a press release.

On scene, police determined that Rebecca Bartczak had been struck and killed while on her bicycle. A truck-bed camper had come off the truck during the crash and was still there. The operator allegedly fled the scene, police said.

Police in Hampton Falls spotted the vehicle in Kensington, New Hampshire, and stopped the vehicle, according to authorities.

The victim was a mother of two and recently became a grandmother, according to a GoFundMe started to help support her family.

“Becky was a dedicated, caring, hardworking, and very loving mother to our student and his young sister,” according to the fundraiser, started by an Amesbury teacher. “The young man recently became a father as well, and it is absolutely devastating to think of his daughter growing up without her grandmother.”
