A team of federal agents used heavy equipment to dig deep in the backyard of a Randolph home on Wednesday, apparently searching for evidence.

The FBI’s Evidence Response Team and officers with the Randolph Police Department set up camp at a house at 25 Mitchell St. just after noon.

“[Law enforcement] are on scene in connection with an ongoing investigation,” an FBI spokesperson told WBZ. “We are searching for specific evidence and there is no threat to public safety.”

FBI spokesperson Kristen Setera told The Boston Globe that the FBI was on scene searching for evidence in a criminal probe, but did not elaborate since the probe is pending.

After speaking with neighbors, WCVBs 5 Investigates reported the excavation was connected to an ongoing investigation into the case of a missing man.

“When my wife left work today, she talked to a police officer who said it was a missing persons case from 2005,” a resident told WCVB.

Neighbors also told WCVB that the most recent residents, an elderly couple, just moved out.
