A Taunton woman was struck and killed by a driver authorities say was on drugs

A Taunton man is facing a variety of charges after he allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian late Tuesday afternoon while under the influence of drugs.

Roland Escobar, 42, is being charged with manslaughter, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon – motor vehicle, operating while under the influence of drugs – felony homicide, operating while under the influence of drugs – death resulting, operating while under the influence of drugs – second offense, leaving the scene – death resulting, and leaving the scene of property damage, the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said in a press release.

Around 4:30 p.m., Taunton police were called to the intersection of Main and Cedar streets for an alleged erratic operator of a Chevrolet SUV who had reportedly struck a pedestrian.

There, police found Lisa Rocha, 59, also of Taunton, with serious injuries. She was taken to Morton Hospital and later pronounced dead, authorities said.

Escobar, meanwhile, had taken off from the scene in the SUV and had then struck a vehicle on Summer Street, according to the district attorney’s office. He was transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton and taken into custody after being treated, and medically cleared, for minor injuries.

Escobar was planned to be arraigned in Taunton District Court on Wednesday, officials said.
