2 pride flags stolen in Wenham

Wenham Police are investigating two pride flags stolen this weekend and are asking the public for any information regarding the incident, according to an announcement on Monday. 

Police were notified on Saturday of two stolen pride flags – one from the First Church in Wenham and the other from the Wenham Museum. The First Church in Wenham previously reported a stolen pride flag in late May, which police say is also still under investigation. 

The First Church in Wenham reportedly lost rainbow flags during both incidents while the Wenham Museum lost a progress flag. Both flags represent LGBTQ+ support and allyship.

“There simply is no place for any activity of this type in Wenham, and we stand with the LGBTQ members of our community,” Police Chief Kevin DiNapoli said. 

The First Church in Wenham reported their flag was cut off, while the Wenham Museum reported their flag was torn down.

The Wenham Museum is located on Main Street while the First Church in Wenham is around the corner on Arbor Street. The two locations are less than 350 feet apart. 

“This doesn’t really reflect the values of Wenham or our organization,” Executive Director of Wenham Museum Kristin Noon told WBZ Radio. “We would so much rather have a conversation, and we’re saddened.”

WBZ Radio also reported DiNapoli said there is not enough information yet to investigate the thefts as hate crimes.
