Man saved from drowning and then arrested in Eastham

After being treated by fire personnel, further investigation led police to learn he had broken into the nearby residence earlier and was arrested.

A man was saved from drowning by police and then arrested on Sunday night, according to the Eastham Police Department.

The man – later identified as Joseph Selwyn of Exeter, Rhode Island – previously broke into a house on Samoset Road, police said. Following the break-in, he ran from the house and into Depot Pond.

Police were reportedly notified at 11:15 p.m. Sunday night of a man crying for help from the pond. When police reached the area, they heard Selwyn call for help initially, but he reportedly went quiet after police identified themselves.

A fire department rescue boat was then sent out toward where police heard Selwyn, where they eventually found him and brought him to land.
