A 22-year-old man from Boston is facing a variety of charges after he allegedly crashed a vehicle into a liquor store in Chelsea and fled the scene.
David Cheek is being charged with failure to stop for police, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition without federal identification, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, improper storage of a large capacity firearm, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and a motor vehicle lights violation. He will appear in court at a later date.
Just before 1 a.m. Tuesday, a trooper saw a white sedan operating slowly down Spruce Street in Chelsea without its headlights on, state police said. The trooper stopped the vehicle and asked the operator for a license and registration.
“While shuffling through papers in the glove box the operator suddenly accelerated the vehicle fleeing the scene,” police said in a release. “The sedan was last seen by the Trooper turning left onto Williams Street.”
Then, state police were notified by Chelsea police that there was a crash on Williams Street near Chestnut Street, and the vehicle involved matched the description of the one that fled. However, the operator had allegedly taken off, according to The Boston Globe. Two people who were in another vehicle involved in the crash were taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.
Inside the vehicle, authorities allegedly found a sawed-off shotgun and shotgun shells, state police said. A description of the suspect was given out, and a state police sergeant found him. Cheek was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for related injuries.
Bricks and glass from the liquor store ended up in the road as a result of the crash, according to NBC10 Boston.
