A Brockton man allegedly killed his father in East Bridgewater’s first murder in nearly 3 decades

Police said the matter was "an 'isolated incident' and community members are not in any danger."

A Brockton man allegedly murdered his 70-year-old father at an East Bridgewater home Monday evening.

Stephen Walcott, 42, was arrested on one count each of murder and violation of a restraining order, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

According to prosecutors, East Bridgewater police responded to a request for a well being check at a home at 137 Cedar St. around 6:30 p.m.

First responders found a man suffering from apparent head trauma at the scene, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was not identified by officials; however, the man has been identified by his daughter, Lisa Walcott, in media reports, including The Brockton Enterprise, as Stephen Walcott.

Lisa Walcott told reporters her brother is responsible for their father’s death.

East Bridgewater police contacted Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, and an investigation led authorities to a home in Brockton where Stephen Walcott was ultimately arrested, according to officials.

In a statement posted to Facebook, East Bridgewater police said the matter was “an ‘isolated incident’ and community members are not in any danger.”

Lisa Walcott told the Enterprise Tuesday morning that her brother suffers from bipolar disorder and her family had sought to get him help.

“My dad didn’t do anything wrong. It was just my brother’s mental illness that got ahold of him,” Lisa Walcott told WCVB. “He couldn’t get the help he needed — that’s what the problem was.”

She said her father was “the sweetest guy you would ever want to know.”

“He was the best guy ever — and he’s never going to be replaced,” she told Boston 25 News.

According to the Enterprise, the alleged homicide is the first in East Bridgewater since 1992, when Kent “Rusty” Taber Jr., 33, was fatally stabbed.

Stephen Walcott was slated to be arraigned in Brockton District Court on Tuesday, prosecutors said.
