N.H. man charged with murder, assault in his mother’s apparent homicide
Timothy Martin, 23, remains in the hospital after being shot by police.
A 23-year-old New Hampshire man has been charged with the murder of his mother, along with assault-related charges after allegedly attempting to attack responding police with a knife in Wakefield.
Timothy Martin, of Manchester, N.H., who was shot by police during the incident and is still in Lahey Hospital in Burlington, is being charged with murder, and three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
Martin is accused of killing his mother, Pamela Wood, 61, who lived on Otis Street in Wakefield. His arraignment has not been scheduled yet, authorities said.
On Tuesday, Wakefield police had gone to 11 Otis St. for a well-being check just before 10 a.m. Wood, a speech therapist, hadn’t shown up for work. The school district contacted her family, who went to the home, but didn’t have a key to get in, and went to the police station.
Firefighters helped open a back door; Wood was found dead in the basement with “multiple traumatic injuries,” some thought to have been caused by a knife, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said during a Tuesday press conference.
When officers descended into the basement, Martin allegedly “emerged from a corner,” and charged at officers holding a knife over his head, according to Ryan on Tuesday. Because of the small space, and Martin ignoring orders to put the knife down, two officers fired at Martin. Martin was hit; he underwent surgery. He is in stable condition, authorities said Thursday morning.
After obtaining a search warrant, detectives went into the home and found two knives, officials said.
The two officers who fired their service weapons are on administrative leave. Five officers were brought to nearby hospitals “as a precautionary measure” and were released. The investigation continues.
