A 17-year-old from Randolph was fatally shot while behind the wheel of a vehicle in Stoughton, and authorities are searching for two suspects.

Stoughton police were called to 31 Jones Terrace around 3 p.m. Tuesday after multiple 911 calls reporting the sound of gunshots, according to the Norfolk District Attorney in a press release.

Upon arrival, authorities found Christian Vines behind the wheel of a silver Honda sedan. Vines appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound, and police began first aid. He was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital and pronounced dead, the release said.

Witnesses told police they saw two men flee the area toward Walnut Street. A state police K-9 unit and helicopter were used in the search, but the suspects were not found, according to the release.

While authorities were on scene, the nearby Jones School was placed on lockdown and police were placed inside the building, according to Stoughton police.

“While there is no connection of the crime or threat to the school we are not taking any chances,” police said on Facebook at 4:13 p.m. Police reported that school dismissal was complete at about 5:30 p.m.

In a later Facebook post, police said they believe the incident wasn’t random.

“The victim had no obvious connection to the apartment complex, was not known to Stoughton Police, and his reason for being in the area remains the subject of investigation,” the district attorney’s office said.

The vehicle belonged to Vines’s mother, according to WBZ.

“That’s my baby. That’s my baby,” Annette Vines told the news station. She said she didn’t know why her son was in the area. “If you know something please say something,” she asked.

Annette Vines said her son was going to graduate from Avon High School in a few weeks, and he had played basketball there, according to NBC10.

“I can’t believe he’s gone,” she said.
