Quincy man in wheelchair struck, killed by alleged drunk driver while crossing the street

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

A Quincy man died after he was struck by a vehicle while in his wheelchair crossing a street Saturday night, and the operator of the vehicle has picked up his fifth drunk driving charge.James Bouchie, 72, was attempting to cross Quincy Avenue at Southern Artery when he was hit by a Kia Sportage around 8:30 p.m. Bouchie was reportedly thrown from his wheelchair, and he later died from his injuries at South Shore Hospital, Quincy police said in a news release. Police confirmed that Bouchie was in a crosswalk at the time of the incident.David Bowering, 78, of Suomi Road, Quincy, was arrested at the scene. He’s being charged with motor vehicle homicide operating under the influence of liquor and OUI liquor, fifth offense. Bowering was arraigned in Quincy District Court on Monday, and he’s being held to await a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Friday, according to the release.Police are continuing to investigate what happened with the help of the Norfolk district attorney, the release said.“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mr. Bouchie,” police said.
