Police: Man attacked jogger, threw brick at cyclist, and spat at 2 women along the Esplanade

A Boston man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly spat and yelled at two women, threw a brick at a bicyclist, and then attacked a jogger and pulled off some of her clothing on the Esplanade Wednesday morning.Scott Berio, 40, is being charged with indecent assault and battery, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer, Dave Procopio, a spokesman for state police, said in a news release.Police were called to the scene around 8:43 a.m. for a report of a man who was allegedly “pushing a wheelchair and accosting and assaulting people along the river,” the release said.A trooper found Berio beneath the Charles/MGH MBTA station and placed him under arrest.In speaking with the jogger and witnesses, police said it’s believed Berio “lunged” at the jogger on the Esplanade and knocked her to the ground. Then, he reportedly “got on top of her, hit her and grabbed her clothing, and removed an article of her clothing.” As she was fighting him off, witnesses assisted her in escaping. After the alleged attack, Berio went to the footbridge and then Charles Circle. The jogger was later taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for minor cuts and bruises.Prior to the alleged attack, witnesses told authorities Berio spat and yelled at two other women before throwing the brick at the bicyclist, state police said.Berio allegedly resisted arrest by flailing his extremities and trying to get away. He then allegedly kicked one of the troopers before they were able to get him under control. While undergoing the booking process, Berio allegedly “destroyed a printer in the booking area and explosively screamed at anyone near him.”
