Hingham man, 20, arrested on dozens of firearms charges after police raid

Authorities seized a loaded AR-15-style rifle and a loaded semi-automatic handgun, among other items.

A 20-year-old Hingham man, who allegedly referenced killing police and law enforcement on the internet, was arrested on over two dozen firearms charges early Wednesday morning after authorities raided his West Street home.

Detectives launched an investigation into Julian J. Gilmartin after they were tipped off that he was “seen online loading and unloading a semi-automatic pistol and an AR-15 style rifle, which he purchased illegally,” Hingham police said in a statement.

The tipster also said Gilmartin made several references to killing police and federal law enforcement agents and owned a ballistic plate carrier — a body armor vest typically worn by police and military members, according to officials.

Detectives received a nighttime search warrant for Gilmartin’s home, which they carried out at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday with assistance from Cohasset, Hanover, Hull, and Norwell police, and a regional SWAT team, the statement says.

“The SWAT team called for each member of the house to come outside,” police said. “All the residents walked outside to the SWAT team without incident.”

Inside Gilmartin’s bedroom, authorities found a loaded semi-automatic handgun; a loaded AR-15-style rifle; several loaded and unloaded 20-round rifle and 21-round handgun magazines; a revolver; portable radios; a ballistic vest carrier with two plates; a ballistic helmet; gun and rifle parts; zip tie handcuffs; a double-edged knife; a tourniquet; and packages of QuikClot, which is often used to treat gunshot wounds, according to police.

Gilmartin is facing 26 charges: “Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm (2 counts); Possession of Dangerous Weapon; Leaving a Firearm Unattended (3 counts); Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm; Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card; and Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device (18 counts),” police said.

“He was not charged with making specific threats against law enforcement officers,” authorities added. “It appears that some of the items found had been shipped to his home in pieces from out of state.”

Other residents of the home were not charged, according to officials.

Gilmartin was arraigned through a telephone conference Wednesday and was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Monday.

Authorities said the case remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information can contact detectives at 781-741-1443 or can leave an anonymous tip on the Hingham Police Department website, officials said.
