A driver allegedly racing in Lowell struck 2 pedestrians, killing both

Two pedestrians were killed in Lowell on Thursday evening when they were struck by a vehicle whose driver was allegedly involved in a race on Pawtucket Boulevard.Tyriek Brown, 26, is being charged with motor vehicle homicide and manslaughter, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office. He is set to be arraigned in Lowell District Court by phone on Friday.Brown was allegedly racing another vehicle in the westbound lane when, around 6:30 p.m., the black Ford Mustang he was driving went off the road and struck Jose Medina, 66, and Fernanda Medina, 62, both of Lowell, who were on the sidewalk, the district attorney’s office said in a news release. First responders attempted life-saving measures on scene; both were pronounced dead at Lowell General Hospital.Brown was also brought to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, the release said. He was being held before his arraignment. Authorities are looking to speak with the driver of the other vehicle, which fled.The investigation is ongoing and includes Lowell police, the district attorney, and state police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office.
