Somerville man charged with punching, attempting to rob rider at Haymarket T stop

Transit police said the victim had been standing outside a Dunkin' in Haymarket Station when he was attacked.

Transit police arrested a man on Sunday who allegedly punched a 51-year-old man in the face during an attempted robbery, according to a Transit Police Department news release.Around 11 a.m. at the Haymarket Station, transit police reported a man running toward them screaming for help, explaining that he had been standing outside a Dunkin’ Donuts when two men wearing masks approached him. The victim alleged one of the men punched him in the side of the face with a closed fist.The man told police that he then ran away and the assailant chased after him, trying to reach inside his pockets, but the victim got away. As officers began to search the area, they found Michael Coneeny, 38, from Somerville, who fit the victim’s description, on the Congress Street side of the station. Police said Coneeny was in possession of the mask the victim described and admitted to the act. Coneeny was placed into custody on charges of attempted unarmed robbery and assault and battery. He was taken to the Transit Police Department headquarters for the arrest and booking process.
