Man allegedly shoots his stepfather, immediately drives to state police barracks to confess

According to police reports, Alberto Padro knocked on the back door of the state police barracks and “stated he had just shot someone and he needs to be arrested.”

About three minutes after a shooting was reported Tuesday in Springfield, the alleged shooter turned himself in at the state police barracks just down the road.

Alberto Padro, 28, knocked on the rear door of the Springfield State Police Barracks shortly after 6 p.m., according to police reports. Then he “stated he had just shot someone and he needs to be arrested.”

Padro also reportedly told officers the firearm he used was in his car, which was parked behind the barracks. After handcuffing Padro, police found a handgun, two magazines, and a loose round on the passenger seat of a Honda Accord parked near the station.

Minutes before Padro showed up at the barracks, dispatch received at least two calls saying a man had been shot in the stomach inside a home on Parallel Street.

Police found a man identified in reports as Padro’s 54-year-old stepfather suffering from a gunshot wound lying on his back near the home’s entryway. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center with internal bleeding and is expected to survive.

The man’s wife told police he was arguing with Padro when Padro pulled out a gun and shot him. Both men are listed at living at the home where the shooting happened.

Padro faces felony charges of aggravated assault and battery with dangerous weapon and unlicensed possession of a firearm and the misdemeanors of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, unlawful possession of ammunition, and improper storage of a firearm.

He was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing, which is scheduled for Wednesday.
