A Maine man is accused of setting up a meth lab in a Methodist church
The lab was allegedly in a children’s playroom at the church.
A Maine man is facing charges after he allegedly operated a meth lab in the children’s playroom of a Methodist church.Matthew Anderson, 33, of Buxton, was arrested and is being charged with unlawful operation of a methamphetamine lab, Buxton police said on Friday. His bail was set at $50,000, and he was taken to York County Jail in Alfred after he didn’t post it. His next court date was set for Jan. 24.Police were called to Buxton United Methodist Church around 8:54 a.m. on Thursday for a report of “suspicious activity.”Officers began investigating and found items typically used to make meth, according to police.“These items [were] located inside an upstairs designated children’s playroom at the church,” Buxton police said.The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency was called in to help. Authorities determined Anderson to be the suspect, and he was arrested at a home nearby on a warrant related to a prior suspected meth lab. He was then interviewed about the church incident and charged.In a statement to Newsweek, church officials said they’ve hired professionals to come in and clean the church.“While we hope to resume our use of the building shortly, we will do so only when we are fully assured it is safe,” part of the statement said.
