A Melrose man allegedly beat his dog to death with a rock and buried it in his backyard

A Melrose man is facing a charge of animal cruelty after police say he beat his dog to death with a “large rock” and buried it in his backyard on Friday night.Adam Crook, 44, was arrested Sunday and later released on his own personal recognizance until his arraignment, according to Melrose police.“This suspect’s alleged actions are absolutely reprehensible and inexcusable,” Melrose Police Chief Michael Lyle said in a statement.Police say officers responded Saturday to Mount Zion Road for a report that an incident of animal cruelty had taken place. In their investigation, police said they learned Crook had allegedly dragged his dog from his home into his backyard on Friday night. The 44-year-old, who police said is known to them, then allegedly struck the dog in the head multiple times with a large rock, killing it.Crook allegedly buried the dog, which police exhumed during the course of their investigation with the Animal Rescue League of Boston and federal partners, in his backyard, the department said.The Melrose man was arrested “without incident” on Sunday and charged with cruelty to an animal. He was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Malden District Court.
