A former Boston City Hall staffer has pleaded guilty to federal charges that he sold cocaine and fentanyl while he was still employed by the city in 2016, prosecutors said.

Gary “Jamal” Webster, 36, pleaded guilty in Boston federal court Nov. 7 to four counts of distributing and possessing with intent to distribute cocaine, one count of distributing and possessing with intent to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl, and one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine and fentanyl, the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s office said in a statement.

In September and October 2016, a cooperating witness “made four controlled purchases of cocaine and one purchase of fentanyl from Webster,” prosecutors said.

Webster, at the time, was the director of constituent services for City Councilor Michelle Wu.

Authorities said Webster sold over 300 grams, or two-thirds of a pound, of cocaine and 49 grams of fentanyl in total to the witness between those two months.

“This case was part of Operation Landshark, a federal investigation that targeted impact players and repeat offenders in Brockton and Boston, each who have prior convictions for acts of violence, firearm offenses and/or drug trafficking,” the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Webster, who was charged in August 2018, is slated to be sentenced on Jan. 30, 2020.
