Salem police shoot at, injure man who allegedly tried to run them over
Austin Boga, 25, of Peabody, allegedly crashed the car and then later jumped into South River.
A Peabody man is facing a variety of charges after he allegedly tried to run over Salem police officers with a vehicle and then later jumped into South River early Wednesday morning.Austin Boga, 25, is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a motor vehicle), assault with a dangerous weapon (a motor vehicle), disorderly conduct (fourth and subsequent offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of an accident after property damage, a stop sign violation, speeding, and a marked lanes violation, according to The Salem News.It was around 1:01 a.m. that police were sent to the Shetland Park office complex on Congress Street, and went up to a vehicle. It then “drove at them in a manner that they thought their lives were threatened,” Salem Capt. Frederick Ryan told the News.One of the two officers fired at the vehicle while a third officer followed the vehicle to a Wendy’s restaurant on Congress Street, according to the News. Boga then reportedly crashed the vehicle there and took off on foot along the Salem Harbor Walk; he then jumped into the water, according to The Boston Globe.But Boga’s time at sea was short – an officer soon helped him out of the water and he was arrested, the News reported.“He indicated he had been shot in the arm,” Ryan told the News. “Sgt. Gagnon observed the holes in his right shirt sleeve and his right forearm.”The two officers initially involved, one of which reportedly shot at Boga, have not been publicly identified, according to the News. They reportedly had minor injuries, WBZ reported.
