Surveillance video captures ‘rocket scientist’ wanted for attempted armed robbery
"He told me, ‘open the drawer.’ I told him, ‘no.’"
Surveillance video captured the low-budget disguise of a would-be robber at an Auburn convenience store on Oct. 16.
The man can be seen approaching the counter of the Xpress Stop on Southbridge Street with his coat pulled over his head. He then points to the cash drawer repeatedly.
The clerk on duty, Yamilette Cintron, told WBZ she thought the man was messing around and didn’t tell her manager about the strange encounter until the next day.
“He told me, ‘open the drawer.’ I told him, ‘no’ and I just started backing up and didn’t give him anything,” Cintron told the station.
He also reportedly told her not to hit the panic button and threatened that he had a gun, but she didn’t believe him.
Auburn Police Chief Andrew Sluckis tweeted the video, asking if anyone recognized “this rocket scientist.”

The man reportedly took down his coat and tried to act like the whole thing was a prank when Cintron called out to another person in the store. He left without buying anything, she said.
Though she initially felt the interaction was just funny, Cintron told WBZ watching the surveillance video makes her nervous that the man is going to come back in.
Sluckis wrote in his tweet that the “rocket scientist” is wanted for attempted armed robbery.
