19-year-old woman from Revere killed while celebrating birthday in R.I.
Another woman was injured in the shooting.
A young woman from Revere was fatally shot in Providence, Rhode Island early Sunday while out celebrating her birthday, according to officials. Another woman was injured in the shooting.
The women, who did not know each other, were shot as they walked to their cars around 2 a.m. Sunday, WPRI reported. They were leaving a nightclub on Broad Street.
The 19-year-old was identified as Berta Perreira-Roldan of Revere. She was with a few friends when she was killed, police said.
Crystal Peloquin, 38, of North Providence was hospitalized but is expected to survive.
At a press conference Monday, Maj. David Lapatin said Perreira-Roldan and Peloquin were not the intended targets of the shooting. They were leaving one of two clubs when they were shot, either Levels Lounge or Noah Lounge.
Peloquin was apparently talking with two men who might have been the actual target when she was shot several times.
The men have possible gang associations, according to the Providence Journal.
Lapatin said investigators have some promising leads, but no arrests have been made.
