Woman sent to hospital after Mattapan bike path attack

Police are still searching for the suspect.

A Dorchester woman was attacked Tuesday while walking a Mattapan bike path, state police said. 

The assault happened just after 2 p.m. across from the Ryan Playground at 350 River St., according to a state police release. WCVB reported it appeared the 46-year-old was attacked with a dumbbell.

The woman was taken to Beth Israel Hospital to treat cuts and bruises, police said. She was released the same day.

Officers are still searching for the suspect, who was described as a an approximately 5-foot-10 black male in his 20s with a roughly 3-inch-high afro. He was reportedly wearing a navy blue long-sleeved shirt and navy blue sweat pants during the attack.

The release said the man ran toward River Street through the playground’s parking lot after the assault.

Area residents were surprised no one was around to stop the broad daylight attack, Boston 25 News reported.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to call 911 to be connected to the state police.
