A woman was fatally struck while walking in Seekonk with her 11-year-old son. The driver, who fled, has been arrested, authorities say.

The victim, 37, was brought to Rhode Island Hospital where she died.

A 37-year-old woman was fatally struck by a Jeep Cherokee while she was walking in Seekonk with her 11-year-old son on Thursday evening. Now, the alleged driver, who fled the scene, has been found and is being charged.Jeremy Schmidt, 27, of East Providence, Rhode Island, was arrested by Rhode Island State Police around 4:30 a.m. Friday. He’s being charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a marked lanes violation, according to a news release from the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. He’s scheduled to be brought back to Massachusetts to be arraigned in Taunton District Court Friday afternoon.It was around 6:46 p.m. when police were called to the scene near 893 Newman Ave. for a reported hit-and-run crash. On scene, a passerby was attempting to help Antonieta Vargas. She was brought to Rhode Island Hospital and later died, the release said.
