A 19-year-old Dudley man was taken into custody Friday after allegedly crashing a BMW into the side of a house in West Brookfield and then taking off on foot into a swamp.

A state police K-9 unit began tracking the suspect after the call came through around 5 a.m. The suspect, who hasn’t been named by police, allegedly hadn’t stopped for West Brookfield police and continued onto Church Street, where the BMW first struck a utility pole and then careened into a house, leaving a gaping hole and furniture visible, before hitting a tree and becoming disabled. The 19-year-old then took off into the woods, state police said.

Police K-9 Boomah with his trooper partner picked up the suspect’s scent and sniffed behind a couple of houses before making his way in front of a third house, according to authorities. Boomah then continued toward Brandish Brook swamp, described as “dense, deep swamp” by police.

The K-9 unit then proceeded out of the swamp and toward Wickaboag Valley Road. Soon afterward, the suspect was found just ahead of Boomah, and was arrested, police said.

The teen was brought to Mary Lane Hospital since he reportedly had cuts from his time in the woods. He was turned over to West Brookfield police, who were expected to determine charges.
