Police broke the window to Manuel Vidal's vehicle to pull him out and arrest him.
A police chase through multiple communities ended in West Bridgewater early Monday morning with officers breaking the window of the vehicle the suspect was operating and arresting him “after a brief altercation,” authorities said.Manuel Vidal, 45, who police have listed as a resident of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Brentwood, New York, faces a variety of charges in multiple communities. In Randolph, he is charged with reckless operation, unlicensed operation, and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, according to a news release. In West Bridgewater, he faces charges of failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, possession with intent to distribute a class B substance, and resisting arrest, as well as a marked lanes violation.Vidal was brought to Brockton District Court on Monday on the West Bridgewater charges, police said on Facebook. He was ordered held without bail pending a hearing set for Thursday. Randolph police said he will be issued a summons for the charges there. The chase spanned these two communities, plus Easton, East Bridgewater, and Brockton, Randolph police said. Vidal could faces charges in the other communities, according to West Bridgewater officials. It was around 1:48 a.m. that a Randolph officer spotted the black 2020 Toyota Corolla that Vidal was allegedly driving run a red light at Crawford Square to South Main Street. There was no back license plate, and the car drove up onto the sidewalk, according to the news release from Randolph police. The Randolph officer tried to pull Vidal over, but he allegedly continued driving and was “swerving across the road,” police said. The car sped toward Avon at between 30 to 40 miles per hour, and Randolph police notified authorities there. In Avon, four cruisers continued to follow Vidal with sirens on and lights flashing.“Vidal showed no signs of being aware of the police presence around him and did not stop or slow down,” the release said. One of the Randolph cruisers drove in front of Vidal’s vehicle on West Main Street in Avon and slowed the cruiser down to try to get Vidal to stop, according to the release. Vidal did allegedly stop before the Harrison Boulevard intersection. However, when officers tried to walk up to the vehicle, Vidal took off and allegedly crashed into the back of a Randolph cruiser, causing minor damage.“Vidal fled at speeds of up to 80 miles per hour into Brockton down North Main Street. The officers followed Vidal from a safe distance as he drove through Brockton and eventually into West Bridgewater,” the release said. “Concerned for the safety of the public, Randolph Police terminated the pursuit in West Bridgewater and notified area law enforcement agencies about the incident and provided a description of the vehicle.”The chase eventually ended in West Bridgewater, but not until after police had allegedly followed Vidal through multiple towns. Police noted that Vidal would turn into and out of parking lots and would drive toward cruisers.“Mr. Vidal’s vehicle ultimately spun out of control in a parking lot at 740 North Main Street in West Bridgewater and was blocked in by responding cruisers,” according to West Bridgewater police on Facebook. “As Mr. Vidal was stopped and as Officers were getting out of their cruisers, Mr. Vidal put the vehicle in drive and drove directly into a Cruiser as the officer was attempting to exit.”Police then surrounded Vidal’s vehicle, but he allegedly wouldn’t comply with orders to get out of the car. Ultimately, officers broke one of the car’s windows, and Vidal was soon arrested.“Vidal has a history with police, including a history of fleeing from police in other states,” the release from Randolph police said.
