Newton PTO’s former treasurer arrested for allegedly stealing funds
Rebeca Craig also allegedly made false insurance claims and submitted falsified tax returns.
The former treasurer of the Newton Parent Teacher Organization Council allegedly stole more than $14,000 from the organization. Now, she’s facing over two dozen charges in relation to the alleged theft, plus other schemes, including making false insurance claims and filing falsified tax returns.
Rebeca Craig, 37, of Boston, was indicted by a grand jury on 27 counts, according to state Attorney General Maura Healey’s office. These include 10 counts each of making a false statement to the tax commissioner and presentation of false claims, three counts each of submitting a false insurance claim and larceny over $250, and one count of forgery.
Craig was set for a 9 a.m. arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court on Friday; a court date is to be scheduled for her arraignment in Middlesex Superior Court.
Between 2013 and 2018, Healey’s office alleges that Craig engaged in various schemes, like providing documents that were false, or that had been changed, for insurance claims. Craig also allegedly received over $11,300 for submitting false tax returns. Craig, who served as the PTO’s treasurer from 2013 to 2014, allegedly transferred nearly $14,600 of the organization’s money into her personal accounts.
