16 injured after a Boston man assaults a bus driver causing crash into utility pole, authorities say
The suspect is facing multiple assault-related charges.
A Boston man allegedly punched a bus driver when he couldn’t be let off where he wanted in Randolph, causing the bus to crash into a car and then a utility pole and resulting in injuries to 16 people Monday night, according to officials.Matthew Young, 24, is being charged with wrongful interference of operation of a vehicle carrying passengers for hire for a felony, assault and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, and assault and battery on a bus driver, a press release from Randolph police and fire officials said. He was scheduled for arraignment in Quincy District Court on Tuesday.Authorities were called to the scene on North Main Street and Grove Street around 7:15 p.m., the release said. Through investigation, police found the bus driver, a 48-year-old Brockton man, could not let Young get off the bus where he wanted, as the buses have set stops.Following the alleged assault, the bus hit the back of a car and then the utility pole, according to the release. Sixteen people were sent to local hospitals with injuries believed to be not life-threatening. Among those injured were both the driver and passenger of the vehicle that was rear-ended, the bus driver, and a 10-year-old boy who was on the bus. A mass-casualty incident was called by police due to the number of injuries.“This attack on the driver made for a very dangerous situation for riders on the bus and anyone traveling in the immediate area,” Randolph Police Chief William Pace said in the release.
