Man charged with murder in death of Brockton 2-year-old after 3-year investigation
Timy Jo Griffin, 24, pleaded not guilty Thursday.
A California man pleaded not guilty to murder and reckless endangerment of a child Thursday in the 2016 death of a Brockton toddler.
The child was the son of 24-year-old Timy Jo Griffin’s girlfriend, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. Griffin was taking care of the boy, Nazeir Phillips, when he suffered severe head trauma. The 2-year-old died three days later.
Griffin told police the child had a tantrum, fell off his bed, and hit his head, knocking himself unconscious. Griffin returned to California in December 2016 while the boy was in critical condition, a statement from the district attorney’s office said.
Detectives interviewed physicians that treated Phillips and consulted an outside expert during their three-year investigation. In a statement, the district attorney said “numerous” physicians and the expert believe the boy’s injuries “were likely the result of violent shaking and/or slamming.”
Massachusetts State Police detectives arrested Griffin after returning him from California early Thursday morning.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 9, and he is being held without bail.
