An 8-year-old girl and a man were shot in a Dorchester park Thursday night amid Fourth of July festivities, authorities said.

Around 10:58 p.m., police responded to a report for two people shot on Folsom Street, Boston police officer Stephen McNulty, a department spokesman, told Boston.com Friday.

The man, who is approximately 35 years old, was in critical condition and brought to a local hospital, Police Commissioner William Gross told reporters, The Boston Globe reports. The girl was shot in the foot and was in stable condition at a local hospital, according to the newspaper.

Upon arrival, officers found the victims in an “outdoor crime scene,” Gross said.

“As far as we can tell, everybody was in the Mary Hannon Park enjoying the Fourth of July, as they should be,” he said.

It was unknown Thursday night whether the two victims are related or if they were targeted, according to the Globe.

“We’d like to thank everyone that called 9-1-1 so we could get that little girl some help as well as the gentleman,” Gross said.“We can’t tire enough by saying that unacceptable and we’re gonna have to pull together and make sure that things like this don’t happen in our neighborhoods.”

Authorities had no new information to offer Friday morning, according to McNulty. No arrests had been made as of later Thursday night.

Gross said authorities would be in the area Friday to speak with witnesses.

He asked anyone with information about the incident to call police at 1-800-494-TIPS.

“It’s not acceptable for an 8-year-old to be injured in this way,” Gross said. “You’ve heard me say it a million times. Usually the folks who are doing the shootings are repeat, violent offenders, and again, electronic bracelets, stay away orders do not work. Some people have to go to jail.”
