Here’s what authorities say happened when a woman was stabbed in the head while jogging on the Esplanade
The man arrested in the attack has been ordered to undergo an evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital.
A 37-year-old man accused of attacking a woman with a pair of scissors on the Esplanade last week was ordered Monday to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital. Luis Olivo was ordered held without bail while he undergoes the evaluation, according to the Suffolk District Attorney’s office. He is facing multiple charges, including armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, aggravated assault and battery, and resisting arrest.State police said Olivo stabbed a 23-year-old Allston woman “suddenly and without provocation” while she was jogging in the park along the Charles River on Friday afternoon. The woman was hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital with a laceration on her head, as well as other injuries to her head and body. According to state police, the initial investigation indicates that around 3:50 p.m. on Friday, the woman was jogging over the stone footbridge that connects a small island to the Esplanade when Olivo “rushed” her. Police said he “stabbed her in the head with a pair of scissors, tackled her to the ground on the bridge, and struck her” before running away from the scene. Witnesses provided a description of Olivo, who was found by troopers at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Dartmouth Street.

“The suspect was apprehended after a foot pursuit and a struggle, during which a trooper was forced to discharge his electronic control weapon to subdue the suspect and end the violent threat the man was posing to responding troopers and other people in the area,” police said.
Scissors believed to be used in the stabbing were recovered at that time.

A court appointed doctor said Monday during Olivo’s hearing that the 37-year-old was experiencing delusions and is “acutely psychotic,” MassLive reports.
“I watched his attorney try to talk to him over and over again,” Dr. Jodie Shapiro told the court, according to the publication. “He (was) unable to establish any sort of meaningful connection.”
Olivo is set to return to Boston Municipal Court on July 19 for his arraignment.
