Brockton woman dies after being stabbed during road rage confrontation, authorities say

A Fall River woman was charged with murder over the weekend.

A Fall River woman is being charged with murder after authorities say she stabbed another woman in the neck during a road rage confrontation in Brockton on Friday afternoon that resulted in the driver’s death.Jaqueline Mendes, 32, of Fall River, was ordered held without bail on Monday during her arraignment in Brockton District Court on charges of murder, assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery with a deadly weapon, according to the Plymouth District Attorney’s office. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The DA’s office said Brockton police received multiple 911 calls reporting a stabbing near the intersection of Belmont and Grafton streets around 3:45 p.m. on Friday. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found a woman, identified by authorities as 41-year-old Jennifer Landry of Brockton, suffering from a stab wound to the right side of her neck and “bleeding profusely.” She was initially transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton before being flown to Boston Medical Center.

She was pronounced dead at the Boston hospital on Saturday afternoon, according to authorities. She had a 13-year-old son, The Enterprise reports.

The DA’s office said the preliminary investigation by Brockton and state police indicates that Mendes allegedly stabbed Landry with a knife following a “traffic confrontation” and then fled the scene in her vehicle. 

At 4 p.m. on Friday, Mendes arrived at the Brockton police station and told officers she had been involved in an altercation with another motorist, according to the DA’s office. She allegeldy told officers there had been no accident but that there might have been a stabbing involved, prosecutors said.

The 32-year-old was arrested and initially charged with assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a deadly weapon. After Landry died on Saturday, the additional charge of murder was brought against Mendes. 

According to CBS Boston, Mendes’s attorney’s said during her arraignment on Monday that her client was acting in self-defense, calling the situation an accident. 

Mendes is scheduled to return to Brockton District Court on Aug. 8.
