Police: Man accidentally fires gun in Saugus hotel room, faces related charges

A worker at a hotel in Saugus reported hearing gunshots in one of the rooms on New Year’s Day, and a Revere man is now facing gun-related charges following his arrest by a SWAT team, police said.Dantonio Thorton, 39, is charged with discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, possession of a firearm without a license (third offense), and malicious destruction of property over $1,200.The employee at the WoodSpring Suites Signature Boston North on Broadway heard the gunfire around 2 p.m. on Tuesday. When police arrived on scene, they found a bullet hole in the door to one of the rooms where the sound was heard.Thorton was found to be the person staying in that room, and a warrant was issued for his arrest, according to police.Around 8:50 p.m. on Wednesday, detectives from Ipswich and Somerville, assisting Saugus with the case, found that Thorton was heading into the Town Line Inn Motel in Malden.Malden provided a SWAT team, and Thorton was arrested without incident. Police found a 9mm semi-automatic pistol without a readable serial number in the hotel room, they said.Through an investigation, police believe Thorton accidentally fired the gun in the Saugus hotel. He was scheduled for arraignment Thursday in Lynn District Court.
