While boarding a packed Red Line train Friday evening, a 71-year-old female passenger “politely asked” Jada Campbell if she could move her purse from the seat next to her so she could sit down, according to MBTA Transit Police.

After Campbell, 23, of Boston, refused, the woman handed her the purse and attempted to sit, police said.

It was then, around 5 p.m. at the Harvard Square station, that matters escalated.

“Campbell became enraged and physically threatened to harm the victim,” police said.

The woman, “now in fear for her safety,” tried to move away from Campbell, according to police.
