A Wilmington man used a wooden crucifix to assault someone, police say

Torrey Smith, 39, has been wanted by police since Aug. 22 on multiple warrants.

After a Wilmington man allegedly struck another man with a wooden cross and injured his nose on Aug. 22, he left the scene. But police were finally able to catch up with him early Wednesday morning.A Billerica police officer stopped a vehicle on Boston Road for a civil matter when he noticed that the passenger in the vehicle appeared to be Torrey Smith, the suspect in last month’s assault, Billerica police saidSmith, 39, was arrested around 2:30 a.m. after first giving the officer a fake identity, according to police.He is charged with breaking and entering during the daytime, kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, vandalism, witness intimidation, and mayhem.

Back in August, police say Smith broke into an ex-girlfriend’s home and began assaulting her and “an acquaintance.”

Police didn’t identify the person assaulted with the crucifix, but Deputy Police Roy Frost said it was a man and he received “significant injuries.”

The crucifix was between 6 and 8 inches tall and 3 and 4 inches wide, Frost said.

Smith was expected to be arraigned in Lowell District Court on Wednesday.
