Man accused of urinating on flags at Somerville cemetery arraigned on related charges

The man accused of urinating on American flags at a veterans cemetery in Somerville turned himself in Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to related charges in court Thursday morning.

Michael C. Lacey, 31, homeless but with a physical address listed as 20 Bartlett Place, Boston, according to Somerville police records, was arraigned in Somerville District Court. He was charged with open and gross lewdness, vandalizing a gravestone, and disturbing the peace, according to the court. 

Lacey was released on personal recognizance and is due back in court on Nov. 8, according to officials.

Lacey was said to be on a date with a woman he met online at the time of the incident, according to the police report obtained by The Boston Globe

He allegedly removed flags from the ground at the Somerville Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Sept. 10 and urinated on them, according to the Globe.

George Gatteny, who said he witnessed the incident, described what he saw in a Facebook post that drew over 28,000 comments and over 60,000 shares.

A warrant was issued for Lacey’s arrest on Sept. 13.
