Springfield man arrested after ‘random’ assault at MGM casino, police say

The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to police.

A Springfield man is facing assault charges after state police say he randomly attacked a New York man at the MGM Springfield casino on Sunday.Devon Williams, 27, was charged with assault to murder, assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot), according to a state police releasePolice were also investigating if Williams is connected to three other attacks in Springfield earlier on Sunday.Springfield police responded to a string of assaults — one each on Grenada Terrace, Sumner Avenue, and Kimberly Avenue — starting at 3:40 p.m., state police said.About an hour later, Williams allegedly went into the casino via a Main Street entrance and, from what evidence suggests, randomly assaulted the man, police said.Williams fled the scene in a car, according to police, but casino security was able to grab the license plate number. State and Springfield police found Williams within a couple hours at a Chestnut Street apartment, where he was taken into custody.Williams’s bail was set at $100,000, and police believe prosecutors want to request a dangerousness hearing, which would have Williams held until his next court date.
