Man indicted on manslaughter charges in August crash that killed 2

A man was indicted on manslaughter charges Wednesday in connection to an August crash with an airport shuttle that killed two people, the Suffolk District Attorney’s office said in a statement Monday.Steven Birenbaum, 27, of Swampscott, was indicted by a grand jury and charged with two counts of manslaughter by motor vehicle and two counts of motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence.Around 1 a.m. on August 31, Birenbaum was driving a Subaru Legacy at speeds of up to 80 mph on Interstate 90 east when he hit the back the airport shuttle, resulting in both vehicles colliding with highway barriers, according to the statement.The DA’s office said two passengers in the shuttle, Joseph A. Rodriguez, 59, and Sandra L. Arreola, 56, both of El Paso, Texas, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. The shuttle driver and two other passengers sustained less serious injuries, according to authorities.Blood samples taken from both drivers revealed the shuttle driver had no signs of alcohol in his system, while Birenbaum had a blood-alcohol content of 0.15, which is almost twice the 0.08 legal limit, the DA’s office said.Birenbaum is expected back in court to be arraigned on November 28, according to authorities.
