Around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, transit police officers responded to the Middlesex Turnpike in Burlington for a report of an assault on an MBTA bus driver.

A man, later identified as 21-year-old Daniel Koolick, boarded the bus at Alewife station before deciding he wanted to get off while traveling near the Burlington Mall, according to police.

The driver told him he couldn’t pull over in between stops but that he would let him off at the next one, which was less than a minute away. Koolick allegedly got angry and started screaming at the driver as well as kicking and breaking the doors and windows of the bus, police said.

Koolick then allegedly assaulted the driver, grabbing him by the throat and saying, “Do you want to die.” He let go of the driver’s neck and fled from the bus, leaving his cellphone behind, according to police.

Police said Koolick returned to the area to get his phone and, as multiple police vehicles had arrived to the scene, he was arrested for aggravated assault and battery, threats to commit a crime, and malicious destruction of property.

Koolick was expected to be arraigned Monday.
