New Bedford gym owner pleads guilty to heroin distribution charges
A New Bedford gym owner pleaded guilty Wednesday to heroin distribution charges after allegedly distributing the drug throughout Bristol County, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island, the U.S. Attorney’s office said in a statement.Sharik Mendes, 39, the owner and operator of the HEART gym, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possession with the intent to distribute heroin.In 2015 and 2016, Mendez received large amounts of heroin from two Rhode Island-based suppliers, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. The defendant then allegedly distributed the heroin to low-level distributors in the New Bedford area.Mendes accepted responsibility for conspiring to distribute 600-700 grams of heroin, authorities said.Mendes is scheduled to be sentenced on January 11, 2017.
