Police: Man assaulted 3 year-old nephew

Police say a Worcester man assaulted his 3 year-old nephew while the boy was in his care.

A man called police just before 3:30 p.m. on Thursday to say he killed his 3 year-old nephew, according to Worcester police. When police arrived at the apartment, they say the 3 year-old boy was sitting on a couch, conscious and alert.

Taj McDonald, 21, the boy’s uncle, let officers into the apartment, said police.

The boy, who police say had trauma to the face and neck area, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The boy is in stable condition and does not have life-threatening injuries, according to police.

McDonald was taken to police headquarters, where “police were told that he assaulted the boy several times.” Police say McDonald was in charge of watching the boy while his father was at work.

McDonald was charged with two counts of attempted murder, reckless endangerment of a child, indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, assault and battery on a family or household member, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and strangulation.

McDonald will be arraigned at the Worcester County District Courthouse on Friday.

Police are investigating the incident and have contacted the Department of Children and Families.
