Around 11:30 p.m., a Rockland police officer on patrol in the area of Front and Main streets spotted a vehicle driving erratically on Main Street and tried to stop it. Police said the vehicle refused to stop and a short pursuit followed.
The driver, later identified as Shane Hall, of Portland, lost control of the vehicle while driving westbound on Pleasant Street and crashed, according to police. Hall allegedly tried to flee the scene but was arrested by police.
A woman who was a passenger in the vehicle told officers she was walking home from work when Hall jumped from his vehicle wearing a ski mask and attacked her, choking her until she was unconscious, police said.
The woman found herself in Hall’s vehicle when she regained consciousness, police said. She called 911 while officers were pursuing the vehicle and told dispatchers she had been kidnapped. Police said this was not relayed to the officers before the crash as the events unfolded quickly.
Police said the woman’s wallet and keys were later found at the scene of the alleged abduction. Hall was reportedly not known to the victim before this incident, according to police. The woman was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center as a precaution.
Hall was charged with kidnapping and eluding an officer and was expected to appear in Knox County Court.
