Fall River man sentenced to 10-15 years for cutting off a man’s finger

Police never recovered it.

A Fall River man was sentenced on Friday to serve 10 to 15 years in state prison after he cut off another man’s pinky finger in a mafia-style confrontation in 2012.

John Soares, 43, was convicted on charges of mayhem and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing substantial injury in Fall River Superior Court earlier this month.

On March 28, 2012, the victim was working at Columbia Towing in Fall River where he was confronted about money missing from the business, according to a statement from Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn III.

The victim denied anything to do with the missing funds, but was pressured to write a note confessing to stealing it, the DA’s office said.

When he refused, Soares told him to meet him in the garage, where Dennis Silvia, 47, and James Connors, 50, allegedly tipped the surveillance cameras to face the ceiling, according to Quinn’s office.

That’s where Soares took out a pair of pipe cutters and cut off the victim’s right pinky finger, then left and took the finger with him, according to the DA’s office.

Police never recovered the finger.

Three other defendants in this case, including Silvia and Connors, and Donna Silvia, the victim’s employer, are still awaiting trial or deposition.
