Clinton man arrested after car chase in Worcester

A Clinton man was arrested Wednesday after a car chase that resulted in a crash in Worcester, police said in a Facebook post.Around 12:25 a.m., an officer saw a gray Mazda sedan run through a red light without slowing down at the intersection of Foster and Green streets, police said. The officer tried to halt the vehicle but it continued without stopping, according to police. The vehicle allegedly engaged in multiple motor vehicle violations, including driving through a stop sign and bouncing off a curb. Police said officers tried to stop the car for about 5 miles before it crashed into a guardrail at the intersection of Main and Ludlow streets. When officers approached the driver, 46-year-old Richard Santiago, to check on his well-being, he started swearing at them, according to police. Santiago allegedly refused to show officers his hands or exit the car. After being removed, Santiago allegedly started fighting with the officers and resisted being placed into handcuffs. Police said they were able to handcuff him after a violent struggle.Santiago then refused to get into the patrol car and had to be physically picked up and carried into the vehicle, during which time he spat at the officers, according to police.Police later discovered the sedan Santiago was driving had been stolen earlier in Worcester. Santiago was charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, assault and battery on a police officer, failure to stop for the police, operating with a suspended license, and several motor vehicle offenses, police said.
