Police cracking down on illegal drag racing in South Boston
Police are cracking down on illegal drag racing in South Boston, Boston police said in a statement Tuesday.Police said they ran an operation throughout the weekend in an effort to stop the racing from occurring in the New Market Square area.In the course of the operation, officers gathered information on the participants and organizers of the illegal events, during which large crowds gather to watch modified cars, trucks, ATVs, and dirt bikes race against each other. There has been an increase in this type of activity and growing concern among local community members since February 2016, police said. Prior overt police intervention attempts, however, led to the perpetrators fleeing the scene undetected as the crowd dispersed in mass. The weekend operation resulted in officers issuing around 75 motor vehicle citations and 35 criminal complaint applications, police said. Police also filed “Immediate Threats Reports” with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to have the operators and owners of the vehicles’ licenses revoked.Police said participants in the illegal drag racing came from all over Massachusetts, including the North Shore, Lowell, Everett, Lynn, as well as Boston.
