Police: Man allegedly tried to abduct teens in Townsend
A man allegedly attempted to abduct three teenagers Tuesday afternoon in Townsend, police said in a statement.Around 3:10 p.m., three teenage boys told police a man jumped out from behind a large rock formation near the police station, startling them. The man then tried to grab one of the teens and hit another on the back of the neck, according to police. The teens told police the man then ran into a wooded area near the Townsend Senior Center and Library’s parking lot.Police said several officers and Lunenburg police’s K-9 unit arrived on scene but couldn’t find the suspect after searching for an hour. Video surveillance from the senior center did not reveal any information about the identity of the suspect, according to police.“We continue to investigate this incident and follow up on any leads,” Police Chief Robert M. Eaton said. “We want to stress that after reviewing video surveillance of the area and speaking with the reporting parties, we do not believe that the public is in any danger.”The suspect was described as an older man with a long gray beard who was wearing a red T-shirt, khaki shorts, and either a Boston Red Sox or Bruins hat, police said.Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Townsend police at 978-597-6214
