Man arraigned in fatal Mattapan hit-and-run
A Dorchester man was arraigned Tuesday in connection with a deadly Mattapan hit-and-run, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said in a statement.Anthony E. Buchanan, 39, was charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence and leaving the scene of a collision causing death, after he allegedly struck and killed Johnette Sims, 46, of Dorchester, while drunk behind the wheel, according to the DA’s office.
Buchanan pleaded not guilty to the charges, The Boston Globe reports.
Around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to the area of Morton and Canterbury streets for a report of a fatal collision, the DA’s office said. The investigation revealed Buchanan was driving a rented Dodge Charger when he allegedly hit Sims, before fleeing the scene.
Buchanan later turned himself in while police were searching for him, the DA’s office said. He allegedly admitted to state police that he had struck Sims and left the scene.
He told police he’d had two shots of alcohol earlier that day, but troopers said they smelled alcohol on his breath and his eyes appeared to be bloodshot, according to the DA’s office.
Buchanan was held on $5,000 bail and, if released, ordered to not drink alcohol, stay away from the victim’s family, and remain in Massachusetts while the case is pending.
He was also cited with speeding and a marked lane violation, and is expected back in court on October 7.
