Man charged in fatal Mattapan hit-and-run

A 39-year-old Dorchester man was charged early Sunday morning after allegedly fatally striking a pedestrian in a Mattapan crosswalk the previous night, state police said in a statement Sunday. Anthony E. Buchanan was charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of liquor, leaving the scene of a crash that caused personal injury or death, speeding, and a marked lanes violation, police said.Around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, 46-year-old Johnette R. Sims, of Dorchester, was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Morton and Canterbury streets, according to police. After hitting Sims, the driver of the vehicle stopped briefly and then fled, police said. Sims was pronounced dead at the scene.Troopers then identified the vehicle involved in the crash as a 2016 Dodge Charger and determined it had been rented at Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Dorchester by Buchanan, according to police.Police said Buchanan was driving erratically and at a high speed eastbound on Morton Street when he hit Sims. Around 1 a.m. Sunday, Buchanan turned himself in, according to police. The vehicle was later found on Mount Pleasant Street in Boston.Buchanan is expected to be arraigned Tuesday, according to police.
