Uber driver charged with sexual assault released on own recognizance

A 32-year-old Uber driver accused of sexually assaulting a passenger pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance at a Friday arraignment.

Michael Verdine, of Brockton, was arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman he’d picked up while driving for the ride-share service, between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office. He has been charged with two counts of rape and two counts of indecent sexual assault, according to police.

According to a police report obtained by The Boston Globe, the woman called for an Uber and was picked up by Vedrine. The report says he then stopped the car on Ross Road and began touching and grabbing her. When the woman tried to walk away, Vedrine grabbed her from behind and sexually assaulted her, the woman told police.

Prosecutors recommended $50,000 bail for Verdine, and Judge Lisa Ann Grant released him on his own recognizance, the DA’s office said. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 13.
