Woburn man charged following stabbing outside sports bar

A Woburn man is facing a charge of assault with intent to murder, after he allegedly stabbed another man Friday outside a local sports bar.

James Lyons, 36, was at Jake n JOES Sports Grille in Woburn last Friday night, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office and Woburn police. Officials said Lyons and the victim—a 31-year-old man whose identity has not yet been released—left the local chain restaurant shortly after it closed at midnight.

When the two men were in the parking lot, prosecutors say they got into a heated argument and shoving match. During the fight, Lyons allegedly pulled out a knife, stabbing the victim and then fleeing the scene. Initial reports at the time indicated that police suspected he left on a motorcycle.

Police arrived to the parking lot restaurant shortly thereafter and found the victim suffering from apparent stab wounds to the neck. The man was reportedly taken to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington for surgery. Officials said Monday he remains in critical, but stable condition.

According to the DA’s office, Woburn and state police found and arrested Lyons late Friday night at a residence in Woburn.

During his arraignment Monday, Lyons pleaded not guilty, according to DA spokeswoman Meghan Kelly. Woburn District Court Judge Timothy Gailey ordered Lyons held pending the outcome of a hearing next Monday to assess whether he poses any public danger.
