A high school student from Framingham is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly stabbed his mother and younger brother Wednesday night while on vacation in Florida, Sarasota County officials said.

Gust Ramgren, 16, confessed to stabbing his mother Melissa Ramgrenand 14-year-old brother in Siesta Key, the Sarasota County Sheriff”s office said in a statement.

The mother and brother are both in the hospital and remain in critical condition.

Ramgren is in 11th grade at Newton South High School, according to a police report about the incident.

“We are heartbroken to learn of the tragedy in Florida involving the Ramgren family,” Newton Public Schools Superintendent David Fleishman said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with Melissa and her family as we pray for their recovery. This news is especially jarring as we prepare for a new school year. We will provide every support necessary to our faculty, staff, families, and students during this incredibly difficult time.”

The police report states that first responders got a call from Melissa Ramgren at around 9 p.m. Wednesday saying Gust had stabbed her and her younger son before running away.

Moments later, a neighbor called 911 and said Gust was outside their home, asking for help for his family.

The 14-year-old brother told police that he thought he was going to die, and “asked why his brother would do this,” according to the report.

In an interview with police several hours later, Gust admitted to the stabbing, and said he and his family had been having a good time on vacation, the report states.

He faces two counts of attempted second-degree murder.
